Going viral is a marketer’s dream come true. Many entrepreneurs and marketing managers struggle with making their ideas contagious enough to catch on. But for millionaire Antonio T Smith Jr, this seems to be an easy task.

With multiple podcasts going viral, the bestselling author explains that virality is the reward of risking looking “stupid.” “There is a fine line between what’s viral and what’s stupid,” he says before adding, “and sometimes, they’re the same thing.” He poses the question that one can easily go viral with his or her message if they are willing to pay the price.

“Do you want it badly? Like do you want it enough that you would have it while looking stupid?” he asks. “Sometimes you need food so bad that it does not matter how the food tastes. Other times you would ‘like’ to have food if it meets certain conditions,” he explains. “When you want to go viral in the competitive landscape of the cyber-world, my friend, you must want it regardless of conditions.” he asserts.

According to Antonio, when one wants to go viral for their own sake, they want to go viral with a certain image. And people do not like to push other’s image the way they want to be portrayed. On the other hand, when one wants to go viral at all costs, they make the content about the audience. What the audience would like could be for the subject to not look so polished.

That philosophy is evident in Mr. Smith’s own life as he hosts his podcast from his office. True to Warren Buffet’s style, Mr. Smith runs a group of companies worth over $30 million with a core team in his Galveston office. His podcast is recorded there, he hosts live training from there and often shoots short educational clips at a frequency that does not allow for polishing or over-editing.

Many of these video clips have gone viral on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. “Do you think I actually care about how I look in any of my content? It’s all about putting the message out there. Often, virality comes from volume. And you cannot produce enough volume to get your content to catch on if you are too busy trying to look too good.” concludes Antonio.

He has not just put out a lot of content online but actually writes books, posts on his blog, and launches businesses with nearly the same frequency. “going viral is not just about digital content. Remember, people used to tell stories before the internet.” he laughs. Whether Antonio’s opinions about viral marketing are your cup of tea or not is up to you to decide but what must be said is that the man knows enough about the subject to at least make you think about his opinions seriously.
